Grow your Digital Natives by Engaging Generation Y

Grow your Digital Natives by Engaging Generation YGrow your Digital Natives by Engaging Generation YGrow your Digital Natives by Engaging Generation Y Merks-Benjaminsen, author of Think and Grow Digital What the Net Generation Needs to Know to Survive and Thrive in Any Organization (McGraw-Hill, 2014)If youre an employer, its likely that youve employed or plan to recruit Millennial talent for your business. Why am I so certain of this? Because almost all companies are in some process of digital change that can only be fueled by attracting talented Millennials. The pressure to change comes from three digital trends that impact almost all companies the democratization of information, digital connectivity and an increase in computing power. In my work, I speak to CEOs of the biggest brands and find that almost all of them are conscious of unterstellung trends and want their companies to grow digital. Without digital natives, their companies will be unlikely to grow along with the ever-chan ging digital landscape, resulting in increased competition.Unfortunately, many existing company structures are not anywhere close to a natural habitat thats suitable for Millennials. Hence many businesses risk filtering talented Millennials out of their companies faster than they can hire them. The Millennials you need most are the ones that dont just come to work because they are paid, but instead want to make the biggest possible positive difference in the companies they work for. However, these are also the ones bumping into the toughest walls of resistance and they are the ones that have the best opportunities of finding a better job somewhere else where they can make a bigger difference. In my book, Think and Grow Digital, I provide a peek through the eyes of Millennials, to give employers a better understanding of the issues Gen Y youngsters face when first entering companies that do not have the same Millennial mindset and that may not understand it.Below are some common mismat ches between the Millennial mindset and a mora traditional nine-to-five office culture. Companies that fail to address these mismatches will have a mora difficult time recruiting and retaining Millennial talent, and getting their companies future ready.1. Why Work Nine to Five, Monday Through Friday? The most obvious mismatch between office culture and the Millennial life-style is nine-to-five work life. For Millennials, the Internet is always on. They tend to check their e-mail and Facebook first thing in the morning and again before they go to bed. Because the Internet is embedded in almost everything that Millennials do, they have developed a very flexible lifestyle, and they work whenever an idea emerges whether it is at ten oclock in the morning on a Tuesday or nine at night on a Saturday. The downside to that is that it can sometimes be hard for Millennials to know when to switch off work mode. However, those who know how to find that switch at the right moments are likely to be happiest and most productive when they are given the right amount of freedom.Nine to five is a limiting grid. Its limiting for Millennials because it means that they cant arrange their lives in the way that works best for them. Its limiting for companies because the inspiration to do something great does not always come between nine and five, so companies lose out on great work and great ideas if they force their employees to work nine to five.2. Why Work from an geschftszimmer?Like the nine-to-five limitation, the office as an obligatory work location does not make sense to Gen Y. With e-mail, mobile phones, and video-conferencing always available, this generation does not feel the need to go to the same office every day. Why waste time commuting if you can do almost all aspects of your work at home? The office is still useful, but only as a physical meeting place, a place for conversations and watercooler chats, and a place for coming together every now and then. When going to the office is an obligation, gen Y finds it more limiting than valuable.3. Why Burden Yourself with Knowledge? For older generations, having extensive knowledge about a variety of topics and being able to display that knowledge is often an important aspect of building credibility. In an office culture, that credibility can help you get colleagues to listen to your ideas. Hence, spending part of your time displaying the things you know and telling knowledgeable stories during lunch, meetings, or watercooler moments can pay off.Such stories typically display your latest information about, for instance, the news or politics. Gen Y is different. Since information has always been available to these people at a keystroke, they dont see the need to build a huge database of knowledge in their heads. They know where and how to get information instantly when they need it. When older generations spend time proving their worth and knowledge, Gen Y sometimes views this as pontification or just a was te of time.4. Why Have Regular Weekly Group Meetings? Many companies have weekly meetings where teams come together to prepare for the upcoming week or recap the work done in the past week. unterstellung meetings are often repetitive and feel more like a routine than a real necessity.Members of Gen Y do not tend to come together in fixed groups at fixed times the way some teams used to. They tailor their meetings to their individual needs at each moment. Because their friends have always been just a click away, Millennials have unknowingly acquired the skills to connect to whomever they need at any time. They dont have fixed teams or groups such a structure can even feel like a waste of time to them.If people need to come together for a project, digital thinkers will know where to find the right people at the right time and bring them together in a conference room, through a chat, by phone, or in a videoconference.5. Why Is Some Information Limited to Some People? In traditional comp anies, there tends to be a secretive wall around senior managers discussions. Junior employees typically learn about important topics only after decisions have been made and are irreversible. This makes many young professionals feel disconnected from the company, since they have grown up with so much transparency. The Internet democratized information, and so Millennials feel that everyone has an equal right to information. They need to understand the challenges and opportunities of the companies they work for, and they want to understand how and why those senior to them define strategies to face those issues. If senior managers take more time to share their thoughts and plans at an early stage, they can expect a much more dedicated attitude from young professionals. At the same time, a lack of such sharing leads to a critical attitude and questioning of company policy. From Think and Grow Digital What the Net Generation Needs to Know to Survive and Thrive in Any Organization by Joris Merks-Benjaminsen, reprinted with permission from McGraw-Hill Professional. 5 Tools for Salary Comparison

5 Tools for Salary Comparison5 Tools for Salary ComparisonAs the new day dawns, youve resolved to make mora money - either at your current job or by finding a new one. And you have a sneaking suspicion one of your first steps is to make a salary comparison to see how yours compares with other accounting and finance positions. This isnt lunacy, with unemployment rates for financial occupations below the national average. In fact, degreed financial professionals with specialized skills frequently receive multiple offers and counteroffers. The issue, then, may not be whether youre marketable (especially if youre in an in-demand specialty), but rather knowing how high you can realistically push your salary desires. Here are five tools for salary comparison to help you benchmark where you stand in todays marketplace1. Robert Half Salary Guide? Many industry organizations as well as state and federal agencies publish online salary ranges each year for a variety of positions. Of these, the Rob ert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance is a comprehensive and authoritative source for accounting and finance professionals. It includes salary midpoints for more than 190 accounting and finance positions, and customized wage ranges for more than 135 cities. In addition, the Salary Guide gives you insider information on industry trends that influence hiring and the hiring outlooks for public accounting, corporate accounting and financial services.2. Online salary calculators The Salary Center contains a Salary Calculator that allows you to fine-tune listed salary ranges to your geographical area. It provides quick, at-your-fingertips access to the latest salary information for your location.3. Salary research on job boards You can also make a salary comparison on job boards, such as monster.com and indeed.com. Besides allowing you to search for jobs, many of these boards also have search features to help you find the prevailing pay rate for the kind of work you do.4. Peers in your profession and industryAsking someone to divulge his salary is clearly not appropriate at most networking events where you are attempting to establish new relationships. Thats true as well for people youve known for years. But it doesnt mean you cant gather some very useful information by talking with your contacts in generalities about salary levels in your profession and industry. Anecdotal evidence will round out your other research efforts.5. Staffing professionalsFor a personalized salary comparison and targeted information, theres nothing better than contacting a reputable staffing firm that specializes in accounting and finance. The staffing professionals from the best of these services know their markets and the latest salary trends. And if youre job hunting, they can get you in touch with unadvertised openings through their large local and global networks. Tags

Resolving an Unrealistic Sales Quota

Resolving an Unrealistic Sales QuotaResolving an Unrealistic Sales QuotaIn an ideal world, your sales quota is high enough to hit with a bit of effort but low enough that it is possible for a reasonably good salesperson to reach it. Unfortunately, the analysts who set that quota are sometimes off. Anything from an unexpected drop in the market to a bit of bad press about your company can put your sales quota out of reach. High Quota When your sales quota is set unmanageably high, you can take some steps to try to resolve the issue. What you can do depends largely on who sets that quota number, and how much leeway your immediate managers have when it comes to quotas and commissions. If your quota is set by your sales manager, youre in luck. You can talk directly to the responsible feier and perhaps get some immediate relief. In a large company, however, your sales quotas are most likely set by someone in upper management. Theyll often be determined on a company-wide level with adj ustments based on region, area, and perhaps past sales performance at each location. In that case, youll still need to start with your sales manager because going over his head will only cause bad feelings and a lot of future unpleasantness. How to Reach Out The best way to approach your manager is to set up a quota intervention. Get everyone on the sales gruppe together and schedule a meeting with the sales manager. Whatever the temptation, do not start playing the blame game or you will turn the situation into a rep vs. manager contest, which means that your manager is now your opponent. Obviously, hes not going to want to help you in this case Think of it as a sales call on your manager - youre trying to sell him on your case, which is that your quota for the period is unrealistically high. Before you go into the meeting, pull together all the proof you can find - past performance numbers, evidence of sales-affecting issues such as that aforementioned market drop, descripti ons of your sales activities and their results. Be as specific as possible. The idea is to show management everything youve done to achieve your goals, and that it simply wasnt possible. If you are trying to reach someone in upper management with your manager as the intermediary, draft a letter that summarizes your case and have everyone on the team sign it or otherwise indicate their support. Your manager can pass this letter up the ladder, along with the evidence youve collected. When the aufgabe affecting your sales numbers is a temporary situation, it may not be worth storming upper management to try to get the quota changed, because even if you succeed it will take time for the company to adjust and distribute new quotas. But if the problem is an ongoing one, it may well be worth the effort to present your case.

Funny but true Career advice from your favorite stand-up comedians

Funny but true Career advice from your favorite stand-up comediansFunny but true Career advice from your favorite stand-up comediansCareer advice can be a little overwhelming, especially when you are searching for a job or unhappy with your work situation. It can be almost depressing to read about all the things you should be doing, or worse, the stuff you shouldnt be doing but manage to do almost every day anyway.Luckily, getting career advice doesnt have to be an unpleasant experience. Sometimes youll find really excellent advice in places you never expected like in a stand-up comedy routine Some of the best stand-up comics performing today have really great advice on finding, keeping, and working a job built into their routines, giving you some hearty laughs along with some really solid career advice. Here are five of the best pieces of career advice in stand-up comedy todayPay attention to the red flags during the bewerbungsinterview processYou ever lie so much on a resume they g ive you the job, and you want to have a talk with the company to make sure they arent screwing with you, like, are you sure about this? Look at me, look at my resume do I look like an astronaut? Cristela AlonzoWhile you obviously wouldnt want to lie on your resume, you definitely want to pay attention during the interview process for things that dont seem quite right. Are you severely under qualified but they offered you the job anyway? Does everyone in the bro seem really stressed or upset? Was your interview really poorly done by people who didnt seem to know what they were hiring you for in the first place?Just because you see a red flag or two during the interview doesnt necessarily mean you should pass on the job, but remember that they arent just interviewing you, you are interviewing them too. If the company seems like a place where you would be miserable and you are in a position to be a little picky you might want to pass on the job, or at least negotiate a higher salary before accepting the position.Do what is right for your career, no matter what anyone else thinksI might have messed up, because I was popular as a writer and director. As a comedian, I had to abflug from square one. I went from getting nominated for an Emmy for directing to signing up for open mics, which is elend the way youre supposed to do it. A buddy of mine calls me Benjamin Button. He says Im doing my career backward. But thats what my gut told me to do. Neal BrennanYour work life may not always follow the most obvious path. You may decide that the career youve built up over the last decade or two isnt working for you and switch to a new industry entirely. You may decide that your spouse earns enough money to provide for your family and take that opportunity to be a stay-at-home parent. You may find yourself sick, injured, or otherwise unable to continue in the career you loved, forcing you to choose something different.Just because you arent climbing the most obvious ladder doesnt mean you are going backwards. If the path you choose is helping you be healthier, happier person then there is nothing wrong with going against the grain and doing what is right for you.Set realistic career goalsI never have goals or dreams. My sister says its pathetic and lazy, but I had a goal, to tell jokes to pay bills and not have to live in a trailer. So, I think Im living my fantasy. Kathleen MadiganReach high, aim for the stars, and do everything in your power to achieve your dreams. Nobody is saying you shouldnt have career goals, but really think about what it will take to get you there and whether or not those goals are going to make you happy. One persons definition of success might be another persons failure, but which of those people is going to be happier at the end of the day? Someone who gets caught on the hedonic treadmill will never be satisfied no matter how successful they become but if you can be happy with enough, the odds are good youll never be miser able another day in your life.Weird stuff is going to happen at the office You need to know how to roll with itMr. Finch walked into the office, and Im quoting, Ah One feels like a duck splashing around in all this wet And when one feels like a duck, one is happy And then Mary yelled, Ooh, ducklings To which Mr. Finch replied, Too old to be a duckling. Quack, quack. and walked into his office. I think about that every day. John MulaneyWhile no two jobs are exactly alike, every job has at least one thing in common youre going to deal with some weird stuff at the office. Maybe a coworker is a little bit strange or your customers are crazy, but something about that job is going to give you a story worth telling at some point. If you can find a little bit of joy in the absurdity of office life, youll be immensely happier at the end of the day.The difference between a job and a careerIf youve got a career, thank God. If youve got a job, I hope you get a career one dayCos when you got a career, there aint enough time in the day. There aint enough time You got a career, you look at your watch, time just flies Cos there aint enough time when you got a career. When you got a job, theres too much time. Chris RockIf you have a career that you want to do for the rest of your life it should make you at least a little bit happy most of the time. Nothing is perfect, of course, and every job has moments that make you want to tear your hair out, but a career should give you a sense of satisfaction. If you are counting the minutes until you can get out of the office you dont have a career, you have a job. It might be a really good job with excellent benefits, but it is still a job, not a career. Dont hang onto a job you hate by convincing yourself it is actually a career or you might regret it someday.Sometimes you can find excellent career advice in the places you least suspect, so pull up your Netflix queue and see what you can find

These 6 words will get you unstuck

These 6 words will get you unstuckThese 6 words will get you unstuckWhen was the belastung time something you did (or failed to do) created a serious problem for your business? When did you last choke, blow it or screw something up - personally? If youre good at what you do, it may have been a while, and it probably doesnt happen very often. On those rare occasions when it does, you no doubt take your lumps, do your best to make things right, and move on.Contrast that with the last time you had to deal with a problem elend of your own making. Im willing to bet it was this week. Perhaps even this morning. You may be dealing with it this minute. The more responsibility you have in the organization, the more the buck stops at your desk. Fixing whats broken is your job. The question is whether (and to what extent) its your burden. As a seasoned professional I, like you, dont screw up all that often. But gnarly problems still find their way to my desk with some frequency. In fact, one way of looking at business is as an endless sequence of dragons to be slain. Understood in that light, the battle can be invigorating. But its something with which we all must come to grips. When my company had its near-death experience many years ago, one of the reasons it took us so long to recover was the discouragement I felt as The One Responsible. As president of the firm, I naturally thought that our problems were of my making, and morning after morning the bleary eyes staring back at me in the mirror provided no solutions.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.It wasnt until we had done our first wave of research among other formerly fast-growing companies that I learned that nearly one in five were facing circumstances like ours. It occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, it wasnt about me. Oh, it was still my problem. But it wasnt my fault. Not my fault. Is my problem. That realiz ation - that demarcation - has paid dividends for many years now as Ive learned to distinguish between the burden I should rightly bear when I make a mistake and the blessing I find in solving problems created by circumstances beyond my control. I learned how difficult it is to be creative when youre discouraged (and nearly impossible when youre depressed). If the problem Im facing is of my own making, of course, I feel bad about it, as I should (for a time). If its not, however, I no longer do.This way of thinking works at both the micro and macro level. When day-to-day issues cross your desk, you have no choice but to take them on. Sometimes you can handle them in stride in other cases, they wreck your day or even your week. The farther up the corporate chain you rise, the more intractable the issues you face become. Tiny dragons get slain down the line. You get the fire-breathers.But its also true at a broader level. Companies, and even industries, experience cycles of growth, maturation, and decline. In our most recent wave of research, completed earlier this year, we found that 31% of respondent companies growth was accelerating, 39% were in a healthy phase of maturation, and 29% were facing the pressures of saturation and commoditization. When nearly a third of the economy is struggling even when conditions are relatively healthy, its a fair bet every companys turn in the tank is coming. When its your time, its probably not your fault. Its merely your problem.Allow me to offer three simple steps which, if you can make them a mental habit, will help you overcome the self-blame game recognize, categorize and strategize. The one in the middle is the key when you recognize an unfortunate issue that needs to be dealt with, pause for a moment and honestly categorize whether its your fault or merely your problem. If its the latter (and it usually is), you can dispense with all the negative energy and focus your creativity on strategizing solutions. Youll be mor e inventive, more productive, and more likely to succeed. Youll sleep a lot better at night, too.Not everybody is inclined to guilt and self-loathing, and shame does play a valuable role in regulating human behavior. But misplaced culpability is destructive to business, to relationships, and to your own mental health. Dragons are difficult enough to slay the last thing you need is to feed them.Steve McKee is the president of McKee Wallwork + Co., an advertising agency that specializes in working with stalled, stuck and stale brands. 8 Career-Defining Moves To Make In Your 30s

8 Career-Defining Moves To Make In Your 30s 8 Career-Defining Moves To Make In Your 30sPosted July 11, 2016, by Zahra Campbell-Avenell Hands up if those Top 30 Under 30 lists freak you out, even if just a little. Me too Welcome to the club. Its commonly accepted that your twenties are a time for self-discovery and experimentation, and your thirties are when you should have (at least) begun to put it all together. But that certainly doesnt mean you have to have all the answers dont worry, most of us dont have this adulting geschftsleben completely nailed. Having said that, your 30s are a great time to invest in yourself so you can continue to reap the rewards later on in your career. Researchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research studied the highest career points of scientists and Nobel Prize winners, and found that the late 30s were optimal for peak performance. And this isnt just true for the uber-geniuses of the world Amy Poehler hadnt even started working at Saturday Night Live until she was 31 J. K. Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone when she was 32 Reid Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn when he was 35 and Matthew Weiner (creator of Mad Men) didnt even get his first paid writing gig until he was 30. So your thirties shouldnt be spent nursing a quarter-life crisis they should be about stirring things up and kicking things around to get you in the best career shape of your life. The good news is that even if your early thirties are a distant memory, its never too late to get started on any of these career-making moves 1. Build (and maintain) a strong network By the time youre in your 30s, you should have learned to say no to some people and yes to others. Devote the time and effort in getting to know people, and expand your professional circle. Keep track of your professional contacts by exchanging business cards wherever possible (have some printed if you dont get them for your job) and get into the habit of adding people on L inkedIn soon after meeting them. You never know when people in your network can come in handy they could introduce you to a client, give you new industry insights or even help get you a job. 2. Get really, really good at what you do Your 30s are the time to hone your craft. Put in the effort to become the very best at what you do. If youre leid happy with your career (which lets be honest, most of us have chosen somewhat arbitrarily in our teens or 20s), its never too late to start over. Invest in becoming extraordinary at what you do you owe it to yourself. Lifes too short to settle for mediocrity. 3. Build your personal brand, and own it like a boss In your 30s, you should be more comfortable in your own skin and have a better understanding of who you are, what youre passionate about and what youre good at. Use this information to develop a strong personal brand, and sell the hell out of it. When people ask you the inevitable question, What do you do? dont be caught short cha rm and disarm them with your beautifully crafted personal brand statement. And once you know what this is, dont let yourself get distracted by anything outside whats on-brand for you this is your time. Shine 4. Give yourself the gift of the gab If youre an articulate communicator, in person and/or in writing, youve won half of every business battle. But even if youre not naturally a gifted wordsmith, you can develop your verbal, writing and public speaking skills. Strong communication skills will help people take you seriously, and help propel you further along your career trajectory. 5. Learn to give feedback Hopefully you would have learned how to receive feedback gracefully in your 20s. Feedback both positive and constructive is a gift, and in your 30s you should learn to give feedback in a way that the recipient will cherish, not resent it. Start off with asking the person if they would like your feedback there is nothing more annoying than people giving you their unsoli cited opinion. Then use the BIO model, injected with empathy comment on the Behaviour (i.e. not the person), the Impact it had, and theirOptions going forward. Heres an example of good constructive feedback Sue, may I share some feedback with you? When you delivered your presentation, you kept looking down at the floor (B). As a result, you appeared nervous and people started to leave halfway through the presentation (I). I know it can be difficult to make eye contact with such a large group I find it useful to look over the heads of people in the audience its a lot less nerve-racking (O). 6. Wear a suit of confidence Fake it till you make it, even if youre quivering like a leaf inside. Science has shown that you can trick your brain into being more assertive even forcing a smile can make you happier and decrease your stress levels. Be aware of your body language, as it can speak volumes about you long before you open your mouth. Standing up straight, maintaining eye contact, dr essing the part (even if you work in a casual environment) and adopting a power pose can send strong signals to your brain and others around you. Get over your imposter syndrome youve got this 7. Hustle, baby, hustle Your 30s are an incredible time to learn to sell yourself, your ideas, your politics or your product. For many people, sales is a dirty word, evoking sleazy late-night infomercial hosts and dodgy used car dealers. But if you put aside those associations for a moment, youll see that sales skills are essentially just the ability to communicate the benefits of something. And if youre able to do that, it can get you over the line in so many situations interviews, negotiations, cold calls or making a business case to your boss. There are some great books on sales skills that dont advocate slimy tactics Dan Pinks To Sell Is menschlich is a great place to start. And then, most importantly practice, practice, practice. 8. Take a few risks This is the time to test the bou ndaries of your comfort zone. Are you in a career that you love? If the answer is no, dont fret - its never too late to hit the reset button, least of all in your 30s. Youre far more likely to regret what you didnt do than something you tried and failed at. Dont worry about the milestones that society says you have to reach by a certain point there are plenty of examples of successful people that failed many, many times before they finally succeeded. Try your hand at learning a new skill, travelling, starting up your own business or quitting a job you hate. It may seem scary now, but your future self will thank you for it. A HighTech Bump for Bumper Cars

A HighTech Bump for Bumper Cars A HighTech Bump for Bumper Cars A High-Tech Bump for Bumper CarsWhen you think of amusement parks, the Ferris Wheel comes to mind. The rollercoaster. But maybe lost in the shuffle over the years is the bumper car. Well, its very much alive and welland improving.Originally many bumper cars were electric or gas and youd commonly see them powered by a floor or by a ceiling, says Dutch Magrath, president of Amusement Products LLC. The old way, in the early stages in the Fifties and Sixties, you had a big pole stuck up in the car and it ran around a grid in the ceiling which welches chicken wire. One part was the positive side and what you couldnt see dragging along the floor was the negative. To switch the ride off, youd just flip the switch off, which would turn the circuit off.Magraths company eventually found a way to utilize another transportation favorite of the amusement world. We already were doing a lot with electro-drive systems with go-karts and liked the way we could do power control and performance and wireless control on electric vehicles, he says. The wireless controls for go-karts allowed us to shut motors off and what we ended up doing was creating our own dual motor for the bumper cars.Using one to six batteries, the Spin Zone bumper cars can run up to 12 total hours of continuous rides. renommee Amusement Products LLCThere were numerous challenges to the transition. The piece that allows us to switch from positive to negative and vice versa is an H bridge, he says. It drew a lot of power going back and forth with a hand-powered system. Certain system spikes would happen from going forward at full speed then slamming backwards. It would create surges. We had to take care of it to stop electronics from blowing. There was a lot more load than you would think. To avoid the load problem, eventually they used amp-lighting technology. So when the circuit sense amp draws at a certain rate or amount, it will shut itself down, Magrath says.Another big challenge was integrating radio controls to do wireless. We went to electronic switches to sense where the car was going to make it work correctly, he says.Whether the issue is how far apart to put motors and belts or dealing with batteries, everything was adjusted to be completely enclosed so the customer couldnt get to it. We started out with a CAD program and kept refining it to make sure it would fit in the space available for motors, he says. There was a wide range of DC motors. We worked with a motor supplier and then custom built it.Spin Zone bumper cars are started and stopped by remote control. Image Amusement Products LLCImprovements have also been made outside of simply bumping. With a change in systems, the advantage for the rider and driver of the vehicle in response is better but it also allowed for competition, says Magrath. We could have a target on another car and, when you hit it, the other car would spin for three seconds. It became an ex tra reward for nailing the target, which is different from the past.Bumper cars also have been adjusted for portability, which is important since theyre often part of traveling carnivals or fairs. Instead of building ground metal flooring, its a semi, where sides of the trailer are not sides but are floor-positioned for shipping, he says. When you get to the site, hydraulic jacks allow a 30-foot by 50-foot platform to open. I start by dropping two sides and 30 minutes later, everyones ready to have fun.Eric Butterman is an independent writer For Further DiscussionWe started out with a CAD program and kept refining it to make sure it would fit in the space available for motors.Dutch Magrath, President, Amusement Products LLC

The Minimum Legal Working Age in Georgia

The Minimum Legal Working Age in GeorgiaThe Minimum Legal Working Age in GeorgiaIf you live in Georgia and want to begin your first job, youll need to know what the extremum legal working age is. Are you old enough to be hired? Working can be a rewarding experience for young people. It can teach you how to be dependable, punctual, set financial goals and not live beyond your means. If youre on your own, it can keep you out of harms way and help you support yourself and any family members who may rely on your income. How Old You Must Be to Work in Georgia Federal child labor laws state that the minimum age to work is 14, but Georgia has set the minimum age at 12. However, that only applies to employers that are not subject to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. When state law contradicts federal law about the minimum age to work, the strictest law will apply. Children who work in the entertainment industry (actors, singers, dancers, models etc.) are considered exceptions to the rule and can work, despite child labor laws. The same goes for children working in the family business or on the family farm. Child labor laws do not apply to a number of jobs, including some types of yard work, babysitting, shoe-shining, and newspaper deliveries. Before youth start working, it is important to review the rules and restrictions regarding child labor laws, particularly if juveniles plan to keep working as they age. Required Certificates Georgia state law requires child employment certificates for youth under age 18. Employment certificates are provided by the school. Age certificates arent required in the Peach State. What Hours You Can Work Although teens ages 14-15 can work in a variety of jobs, including in offices, hospitals, and retail stores, the hours they work are limited. Youth this age cant work mora than four hours ona school day, eight hours on a non-school day or 40 hours during a non-school week. Additionally, these teens mustwork hours that fall between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Minors 16 and 17 years of age have no work hour restrictions. Just because these teens have no restrictions doesnt mean parents should let them work as many hours as they choose or their employer wants them to work. If a teens job is interfering with school or may put the youth in a dangerous position because of late (or very early) hours, parents should take caution. Teens are at more risk than adults both as workers and on the streets, and it may not be a good idea to have a teen leaving the house in the wee hours of the morning or returning home from work late at night, especially if theyre responsible for closing up shop. Teens have been robbed, raped, and otherwise harmed on the job. Youth of all ages may not work in hazardous conditions that might cause injuries, death or adverse health effects.
