Nearly eight years ago she established Hayley Cooper Styling, a Sydney-based personal aufzug and fashion stil company helping others find their style, love their wardrobe and shop smarter.What is your current job title and how long have you had this role?My title is a big mix of things I do all the styling services myself, manage customer service, marketing, sales, admin But to sum it up, if I gave myself a title it would be Director/Stylist. Ive been styling and running the geschftsleben for nearly eight years now.How long have you been in fashion?For the past 10 years Ive been working in various areas of the industry across styling, marketing, digital media and retail.What did you study to get into fashion?I completed a two-year Fashion Business course at FBI Fashion College. Its basically a business course applied to the fashion industry. Highly recommend it if you want to enter the industry and know all the bits involved. Formal training in a creative field has huge advantages for your personal career growth in a competitive industry.What did you want to be when you were younger?I actually wanted to be a Fashion Editor of a magazine. Bu at the same time I wanted to work in real estate and property I found fashion was what I loved the fruchtwein and what felt right for me.What was your first job?I worked at Subway when I was 14 before getting my first fashion-related retail job at an urban street-wear store.When did you first know you wanted to be in fashion and styling?I always wanted to work in fashion - I loved helping people and wanted a career that gave me diversity and that had a creative feel to it. When I was working in retail I realised how much I loved helping people feel confident in themselves and it was through their outfit that they got that confidence boost. I wanted to merge the superficial fashion industry with people and their lifestyles. It was after working in retail and doing work experience with stylists that I realised this was definitely what I wanted to do.Explain a typical day at Hayley Cooper StylingEach day varies, depending on what client I have that day, theres never a typical day. Some days Im working with an individual personal styling client, some days Im doing admin work and writing style documents for my personal styling clients, other days Im prepping for or working on an event or photo shoot.If Im doing personal styling, Ill typically start the day at the desk - responding to emails, sending invoices, receipts or gift vouchers or doing prep work for later jobs. Ill then head to the Wardrobe Consult or Personal Shopping Session with my client to do the session. I can landsee up to four clients per day if its a big day, and Ill finish in the night, but its usually two clients per day. At the end of the day, Im back at the desk, repeating what I had done in the morning and making a start on any styling documents I need to create for my personal styling clients. If theres a photo shoot or event on, its a full-on day and often starts at 6am and finishes in the evening. Each photo shoot/event is totally different theyre always fast-paced though I make sure all the prep work is done well in advance to ensure the styling/wardrobe department runs smoothly on the day.Whats the most interesting thing thats happened to you in this career?For me personally, its the growth of myself and my business. Its such an interesting, challenging, enjoyable journey of ups and downs. Im enjoying seeing my business progress.Name the best and worst parts of your job and running a small business?The best parts are working with my personal styling clients, helping them build their personal style with confidence, see their wardrobes in a new light and enjoy fashion and getting that confidence boost. We develop great relationships because its such a personalised experience so Im really grateful to have that in my job. I also love the positive feedback I get from them after their style session or a few months later when theyre feeling awesome about themselves. I also love taking on new projects with new clients, hosting fashion events and styling fashion parades. Its also been lots of fun creating some digital content for Westfield this season. I like the creativity that comes with the job. The worst parts are the ups and downs any business faces, sometimes we have quiet periods, other times it feels insanely busy and theres no work-life balance. The paperwork involved isnt too fun, theres a lot of that involved.Whats the most important career tip someone has given you?To be persistent. Its not always easy to stick to something, but it pays offWhat do you wish someone had told you before starting in fashion and styling?That lea rning how to do face to face networking is important. I was terrible at networking when I started internships and my first fashion jobsWhere do people have to start to get into styling and what is a standard salary package for this role?Fashion retail is a good starting point and doing work experience with stylists. Companies that fail to address these mismatches will have a mora difficult time recruiting and retaining Millennial talent, and getting their companies future ready.1. Why Work Nine to Five, Monday Through Friday?The most obvious mismatch between office culture and the Millennial life-style is nine-to-five work life.For Millennials, the Internet is always on. They tend to check their e-mail and Facebook first thing in the morning and again before they go to bed. Because the Internet is embedded in almost everything that Millennials do, they have developed a very flexible lifestyle, and they work whenever an idea emerges whether it is at ten oclock in the morning on a Tuesday or nine at night on a Saturday.The downside to that is that it can sometimes be hard for Millennials to know when to switch off work mode. However, those who know how to find that switch at the right moments are likely to be happiest and most productive when they are given the right amount of freedom.Nine to five is a limiting grid. Its limiting for Millennials because it means that they cant arrange their lives in the way that works best for them. Its limiting for companies because the inspiration to do something great does not always come between nine and five, so companies lose out on great work and great ideas if they force their employees to work nine to five.2. Why Work from an geschftszimmer?Like the nine-to-five limitation, the office as an obligatory work location does not make sense to Gen Y. With e-mail, mobile phones, and video-conferencing always available, this generation does not feel the need to go to the same office every day. Why waste time commuting if you can do almost all aspects of your work at home?The office is still useful, but only as a physical meeting place, a place for conversations and watercooler chats, and a place for coming together every now and then. When going to the office is an obligation, gen Y finds it more limiting than valuable.3. Why Burden Yourself with Knowledge?For older generations, having extensive knowledge about a variety of topics and being able to display that knowledge is often an important aspect of building credibility. In an office culture, that credibility can help you get colleagues to listen to your ideas. Hence, spending part of your time displaying the things you know and telling knowledgeable stories during lunch, meetings, or watercooler moments can pay off.Such stories typically display your latest information about, for instance, the news or politics. Gen Y is different. Since information has always been available to these people at a keystroke, they dont see the need to build a huge database of knowledge in their heads. They know where and how to get information instantly when they need it. When older generations spend time proving their worth and knowledge, Gen Y sometimes views this as pontification or just a was te of time.4. Why Have Regular Weekly Group Meetings?Many companies have weekly meetings where teams come together to prepare for the upcoming week or recap the work done in the past week. unterstellung meetings are often repetitive and feel more like a routine than a real necessity.Members of Gen Y do not tend to come together in fixed groups at fixed times the way some teams used to. Junior employees typically learn about important topics only after decisions have been made and are irreversible. This makes many young professionals feel disconnected from the company, since they have grown up with so much transparency.The Internet democratized information, and so Millennials feel that everyone has an equal right to information. They need to understand the challenges and opportunities of the companies they work for, and they want to understand how and why those senior to them define strategies to face those issues.If senior managers take more time to share their thoughts and plans at an early stage, they can expect a much more dedicated attitude from young professionals. Unfortunately, the analysts who set that quota are sometimes off. Anything from an unexpected drop in the market to a bit of bad press about your company can put your sales quota out of reach. High Quota When your sales quota is set unmanageably high, you can take some steps to try to resolve the issue. What you can do depends largely on who sets that quota number, and how much leeway your immediate managers have when it comes to quotas and commissions. If your quota is set by your sales manager, youre in luck. You can talk directly to the responsible feier and perhaps get some immediate relief. In a large company, however, your sales quotas are most likely set by someone in upper management. Theyll often be determined on a company-wide level with adj ustments based on region, area, and perhaps past sales performance at each location. In that case, youll still need to start with your sales manager because going over his head will only cause bad feelings and a lot of future unpleasantness. How to Reach Out The best way to approach your manager is to set up a quota intervention. Get everyone on the sales gruppe together and schedule a meeting with the sales manager. Whatever the temptation, do not start playing the blame game or you will turn the situation into a rep vs. manager contest, which means that your manager is now your opponent. Obviously, hes not going to want to help you in this case Think of it as a sales call on your manager - youre trying to sell him on your case, which is that your quota for the period is unrealistically high. Before you go into the meeting, pull together all the proof you can find - past performance numbers, evidence of sales-affecting issues such as that aforementioned market drop, descripti ons of your sales activities and their results. Be as specific as possible. The idea is to show management everything youve done to achieve your goals, and that it simply wasnt possible. If you are trying to reach someone in upper management with your manager as the intermediary, draft a letter that summarizes your case and have everyone on the team sign it or otherwise indicate their support. Your manager can pass this letter up the ladder, along with the evidence youve collected. When the aufgabe affecting your sales numbers is a temporary situation, it may not be worth storming upper management to try to get the quota changed, because even if you succeed it will take time for the company to adjust and distribute new quotas. But if the problem is an ongoing one, it may well be worth the effort to present your case.

When did you last choke, blow it or screw something up - personally? If youre good at what you do, it may have been a while, and it probably doesnt happen very often. On those rare occasions when it does, you no doubt take your lumps, do your best to make things right, and move on.Contrast that with the last time you had to deal with a problem elend of your own making. Im willing to bet it was this week. Perhaps even this morning. You may be dealing with it this minute. The more responsibility you have in the organization, the more the buck stops at your desk. Fixing whats broken is your job. The question is whether (and to what extent) its your burden.As a seasoned professional I, like you, dont screw up all that often. But gnarly problems still find their way to my desk with some frequency. In fact, one way of looking at business is as an endless sequence of dragons to be slain. Understood in that light, the battle can be invigorating. But its something with which we all must come to grips.When my company had its near-death experience many years ago, one of the reasons it took us so long to recover was the discouragement I felt as The One Responsible. It occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, it wasnt about me. Oh, it was still my problem. But it wasnt my fault.Not my fault. Is my problem.That realiz ation - that demarcation - has paid dividends for many years now as Ive learned to distinguish between the burden I should rightly bear when I make a mistake and the blessing I find in solving problems created by circumstances beyond my control. I learned how difficult it is to be creative when youre discouraged (and nearly impossible when youre depressed). If the problem Im facing is of my own making, of course, I feel bad about it, as I should (for a time). If its not, however, I no longer do.This way of thinking works at both the micro and macro level. When day-to-day issues cross your desk, you have no choice but to take them on. Sometimes you can handle them in stride in other cases, they wreck your day or even your week. The farther up the corporate chain you rise, the more intractable the issues you face become. Tiny dragons get slain down the line. You get the fire-breathers.But its also true at a broader level. Companies, and even industries, experience cycles of growth, maturation, and decline.In our most recent wave of research, completed earlier this year, we found that 31% of respondent companies growth was accelerating, 39% were in a healthy phase of maturation, and 29% were facing the pressures of saturation and commoditization. When nearly a third of the economy is struggling even when conditions are relatively healthy, its a fair bet every companys turn in the tank is coming. When its your time, its probably not your fault. Its merely your problem.Allow me to offer three simple steps which, if you can make them a mental habit, will help you overcome the self-blame game recognize, categorize and strategize.The one in the middle is the key when you recognize an unfortunate issue that needs to be dealt with, pause for a moment and honestly categorize whether its your fault or merely your problem. If its the latter (and it usually is), you can dispense with all the negative energy and focus your creativity on strategizing solutions. Youll be mor e inventive, more productive, and more likely to succeed. Youll sleep a lot better at night, too.Not everybody is inclined to guilt and self-loathing, and shame does play a valuable role in regulating human behavior. But misplaced culpability is destructive to business, to relationships, and to your own mental health.
